Whether you’re booking flights to Melbourne for a weekend away or planning a more lengthy holiday in Australia’s cultural and sporting capital, there’s always something new to discover in Victoria's number one city.

What to know before you fly to Melbourne?

“Four seasons in one day” has often been used to describe Melbourne and there’s a good reason for that: it’s true. Melbourne weather is changeable, so make sure you pack for hot, cold and wet weather.

The language in Melbourne is English although with an exceptionally rich multicultural mix, you can expect to find suburbs where languages such as Vietnamese, Ethiopian or Greek are the primary languages spoken at home. Melbourne is also known for its trams, which are an easy way to get around the city. If you’re booking flights to Melbourne, note that the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup, Australian Open and the Formula One Grand Prix are among some of the major sporting events held in the city and always draw the crowds.

Airports in Melbourne

There are four airports in Melbourne, with Melbourne Airport (MEL) at Tullamarine by far the busiest, and the only one to welcome international flights. Melbourne Airport is approximately 23km to the northwest of the city centre and there are quite a few options for travelling between the two, such as shuttle bus, public bus, private transfer service – even helicopter. A typical taxi fare from the airport to Melbourne CBD in non-peak hour traffic takes around 30 minutes and will cost about $60.
